Primary English: Teaching Early Phonics Skills

Event Code CPD 22/074
Event type Course
Event categories Teaching
Event Summary Keen to give your pupils a solid foundation for learning to read through phonics? This course, which focuses on the phonological awareness skills which help children to develop as readers and on the early stages of reading (Letters and Sounds Phase 2), will help you to do that.
Event description Getting pupils off to a fast start with phonics is key to their progress as readers and, as such, is a focus of the current Ofsted Inspection Framework. Through both theoretical and practical approaches, delegates will consider the importance of pre - reading / phonological awareness skills as the foundation of systematic synthetic phonics.

Multi-sensory strategies for teaching the links between letter symbols and the sounds they represent will be explored along with a range of activities to support the application of early phonic knowledge into reading and writing.

This course, primarily for school based practitioners, may also be useful for those working in other settings who are preparing pupils for the start of formal education along with those who work with pupils who are struggling to acquire phonic knowledge and skills.
